Supporting preschool educators to teach children with special needs.

Professional Development and Training

Our trainings focus on helping early childhood educators to teach and to care for children with delays and disabilities. Did you know that…

National survey results indicated that 5.4% of young children with disabilities had been either suspended or expelled from preschool, compared to 1.2% of children without disabilities. 50,000 preschool children are suspended from childcare and 17,000 are expelled. 250 preschoolers are asked to leave temporarily or permanently from their childcare or preschool daily. Our training and consultations are geared toward helping teachers and administrators with classroom supports and differentiated instruction.

Training Available

The Inclusive Classroom: Identifying Children with Developmental Delays

This training identifies developmental milestones and what teachers may consider before referring a child for potential delays. We highlight the importance of non-biased observations and note taking while we also outline conversations to have with parents when educators want to share their concerns for a student. We will identify agencies that support families and teachers with evaluations and any needed resources if developmental plans are needed.

Creating Inclusive Environments that Support All Children

This training will focus on building support for all children including those with special needs. We will take a journey as we consider professional development support for teachers, inclusive classroom environments, and partnerships with parents. Inclusion is not about special treatment for a select group of children, it is about figuring out the right supports to help others see how students can overcome barriers.

The Inclusive Classroom: Supporting a Culturally Enriched Environment

This training provides examples of an inclusive physical, social, and temporal classroom environment. This will include support that will help with students’ emotional literacy. We will consider cultural biases that classroom teachers often have including the culture of the school in comparison to the student’s family or home environment. I will offer classroom support that will help students who need specific accommodations to help with their development and growth.

Inclusion Support:  Partnering with Parents

This training will explore the inclusive classroom environment and how it supports children with disabilities and delays.  We will also discuss ways of building relationships and partnering with families so that we may introduce concerns and have challenging conversations. We will highlight the benefits of parent participation and advocacy for their children; consider classroom and cultural biases and how this may impact our children’s learning.

 Inclusion Support: Embedding Instructional Strategies

This training offers support to coaches and administrators of preschool educators.  We will consider two teaching strategies: the Teaching Loop and Naturalist Teaching as simple approaches for meeting IEP goals.  We will also discuss productive ways teachers may partner with therapists and with parents.  Support staff will help educators identify daily activities to embed teaching strategies that will help them to meet important IEP goals.
